Curcumin has also been used for thousands of years as an additive to food in the form of an active ingredient (extract) of a yellow curry spice identified as turmeric. Starting the year 2000, researchers including gerontologists, clinicians and even scientists, who focus mainly on the study of the aging process, have been uncovering the many benefits of curcumin in the brain. Curcumin has a lot of notable benefits when you include it as a nutritional supplement in your diet. Most importantly, it had shown a significant role of reducing amyloid buildup in the brain, which is directly linked to the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Amyloid buildup in the brain, which occurs in Alzheimer's disease, is a degenerative process that is unavoidable regardless of age. Most of us die with it while others unluckily die from it. Memory functions and learning abilities progressively decrease when the protein, amyloid, accumulates in the brain. Upon paying close attention, most of us will typically observe brain fog where we experience awareness, recall and learning issues. This may become worse along with advancing years.

Last July 2011, the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry released a study stating that curcumin could possibly be the solution to fighting one of the most fatal brain cancer identified as glioblastoma (GBMs). During the study, 9 out of 11 animal studies (by 81%) have shown no significant evidence of toxicity as compared to the use of chemotherapy whereas the results are far worse than the actual cancer. It was also suggested that curcumin selectively attacked cancer cells with no direct effect on healthy cells.

In another study conducted in 2010, researchers found out that curcumin have the potential to target stem cells associated with cancer. Back in 2009, researchers also added curcumin in the classification of pancreatic cancer cell inhibitors. The most interesting fact is that curcumin was concluded in most studies as an aid to many types of cancers, especially brain tumors.
